The Dog and The Shadow

  Once upon a time a dog met a piece of meat unexpectedly.
He gripped the meat in this mouth and went straight home
to eat. On his way home while he was crossing a bridge over a brook, he saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath. He misunderstood that it was another dog with another piece of meat double his own in size. With cupidity he wanted that meat also, so barked at the dog in the water threateningly to get his larger piece. But as he opened his mouth, the piece of meat fell out and dropped into the water. He lost both of meat in the water and his own.

This story teaches that.  

“If you grasp at the shadow you will lose the substance”

สุนัขกับเงา
S̄unạk̄h kạb ngeā

กาลครั้งหนึ่งนานมาแล้ว สุนัขตัวหนึ่งพบเนื้อชิ้นหนึ่งโดยมิคาดฝัน
Kāl khrậng h̄nụ̀ng nān mā læ̂w S̄unạk̄h tạw h̄nụ̀ng phb neụ̄̂x chîn h̄nụ̀ng doy mi khād f̄ạn
มันคาบเนื้อชิ้นนั้นไว้ในปากและตรงรี่กลับบ้าน ระหว่างทางกลับบ้าน
Mạn khāb neụ̄̂x chîn nận wị̂ nı pāk læa trng rī̀ klạb b̂ān Rah̄ẁāng thāng klạb b̂ān
ขณะที่มันกำลังข้ามสะพานเหนือลำธารสายเล็ก ๆ สายหนึ่ง มันก็เห็น
K̄hṇa thī̀ mạn kảlạng k̄ĥām s̄aphān h̄enụ̄x lảṭhār s̄āy lĕk «s̄āy h̄nụ̀ng mạn k̆ h̄ĕn
เงาของมันเองสะท้อนอยู่ในน้ำเบื้องล่าง มันเข้าใจผิดว่าเป็นสุนัข

Ngeā k̄hxng mạn xeng s̄atĥxn xyū̀ nı n̂ả beụ̄̂xng l̀āng mạn k̄hêācı p̄hid ẁā pĕn s̄unạk̄h
อีกตัวหนึ่งที่มีเนื้ออีกชิ้นหนึ่งซึ่งมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าของมันที่อยู่ในปาก
Xīk tạw h̄nụ̀ng thī̀ mī neụ̄̂x xīk chîn h̄nụ̀ng sụ̀ng mī k̄hnād h̄ıỵ̀ kẁā k̄hxng mạn thī̀ xyū̀ nı pāk
ด้วยความโลภ มันอยากได้เนื้อชิ้นนั้นเช่นกัน ดังนั้นมันจึงเห่าสุนัข
D̂wy khwām lop̣h mạn xyāk dị̂ neụ̄̂x chîn nận chèn kạn dạngnận mạn cụng h̄èā s̄unạk̄h
ที่อยู่ในน้ำอย่างเกรี้ยวกราด เพื่อที่จะได้เนื้อชิ้นที่ใหญ่กว่า  
Thī̀ xyū̀ nı n̂ả xỳāng kerī̂ywkrād Pheụ̄̀x thī̀ ca dị̂ neụ̄̂x chîn thī̀ h̄ıỵ̀ kẁā
แต่ขณะที่มันอ้าปากเนื้อก็ร่วงหล่นไปในน้ำ 
Tæ̀ k̄hṇa thī̀ mạn x̂ā pāk Neụ̄̂x k̆ r̀wng h̄l̀n pị nı n̂ả
มันสูญเสียเนื้อทั้งสองชิ้นทั้งที่อยู่ในน้ำและที่อยู่ในปากของมัน
Mạn s̄ūỵ s̄eīy neụ̄̂x thậng s̄xng chîn thậng thī̀ xyū̀ nı n̂ả læa thī̀ xyū̀ nı pāk k̄hxng mạn
เพราะว่าความโลภของมันนั่นเอง

Pherāa khwām lop̣h k̄hxng mạn nạ̀nxeng

นิทานเรื่องนี้สอนให้รู้ว่า
Nithān reụ̄̀xng nī̂ s̄xn h̄ı̂ rū̂ ẁā

“ถ้าท่านไขว่คว้าเงาอย่างลุ่มหลง ท่านก็จะสูญเสียของสำคัญไป”
“T̄ĥā th̀ān k̄hịẁkhŵā ngeā xỳāng lùmh̄lng Th̀ān k̆ ca s̄ūỵ s̄eīy k̄hxng s̄ảkhạỵ pị”
